superfood “milkshake”

I made this for the first time when I was doing Whole30 with Patrick and it’s been a recipe that stuck around ever since. That confession will probably get me excommunicated from the serious Whole30 community, but just remember that is how much I love you, my blog followers and friends. Even though this milkshake is technically Whole30 compliant (based upon the ingredient list), I should warn you that while doing Whole30 it is looked down upon to make healthier versions of treats like milkshakes. Ok. Glad we got that out of the way!

On days you want to feel extra healthy you can call this a smoothie instead of a milkshake. But that is hardly needed, as this is dairy-free, (added) sugar-free, vegan, whole30, paleo, and probably a gazillion other buzzword labels. Seriously though, bananas add so much sweetness on their own that you will forget (or not care about) the absence of added sugar.

Confession: I didn’t know who sang the song “Milkshake” until I googled it two minutes ago. I bet 9 out of 10 of you reading this know the (totally inappropriate) lyrics to the song but not the artist.

SUPERFOOD “MILKSHAKE”

makes one 14-16 ounce milkshake

1 banana*
1/2 to 3/4 cup almond milk**
1/3 cup coconut milk
2 tablespoons almond butter
1-2 tablespoons cacao powder
1/8 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1 cup ice cubes
pinch of salt if your almond butter is not salted

Directions: Blend all ingredients in a blender or food processor.

*If you have a frozen banana, use it instead of a fresh one (and therefore a few less ice cubes).

**The amount of almond milk needed will vary slightly – use less for a thicker milkshake, or more for a runnier one.
